Look Who's Living in Our Garage!

A pair of Carolina wrens are boarding in our garage. We open the automatic door each morning and they hop out, fly to the river birch and often sing a song or two-a song of thanks-a song to each other-a song to welcome a new day. We make sure the door is open late in the afternoon so they can return and settle in for the night. One day they’ll move on without word or a ‘change of address’ card and we’ll miss our morning ritual; we’ll miss our tiny guests.

The coming of spring promises the return of the ruby-throated hummingbird. This magical little guest is the highlight of the year (though I must say I try not to play favorites-giving equal attention and enthusiasm to sparrows and chickadees, nuthatch and titmice). The antics of these territorial hummingbirds rank high on my list of amusements- a backyard theater, a holy migration.

There is an uncanny connection we have to all the creatures of the planet. I open the window a crack some evenings in hopes the call of screech owl wafts through-and then of course our other visitors- rafters of turkeys, a dray of squirrels, a rangale of deer, and what would spring be without the song of the peepers.

I keep my heart open to this connection to all of creation-our vibrant diverse earth community. What a quiet and lonely world this would be without them.
